Physical Description

  • Oval, flattened body
  • Small head with large eyes and small, slanted mouth
  • Silver coloring, faint dark gray coloration on top of back
  • Tips of fins are black

Range

  • Vancouver Island, British Columbia to Point San Rosarito, Baja California, Mexico

Habitat

  • Shallow water, bays
  • Sandy beaches, near rocks, around piers
  • Live in the surf on sandy beaches

Diet

  • Small crustaceans, amphipods, copepods, terrestrial moth flies
  • Visual nocturnal hunter, hence its large eyes

Predators

  • California halibut their main predator

Interesting Facts

  • Often found in dense schools of hundreds of fish
